Senator Outlines Vital Transportation Projects

Catharine Young

State Senator Catharine "Cathy" Young (R,I,C - Olean) today outlined local transportation projects vital to the economy of the 57th Senate District. The projects, revealed after an agreement was reached between the Senate, Assembly and Executive, totals nearly $40 billion. Voters will have the opportunity to vote on the bond act this November.

"It’s great that our local projects are included in the Transportation Bond Act," Senator Young said. "With the passage of the bond act, we will be able to start building the next section of Route 219. Not only are there many important bridge and highway projects, the bond act also targets rail upgrades throughout the district. With rail traffic continuing to grow, it’s imperative that we provide the necessary infrastructure to ensure the region’s role in the rail freight industry."

The five-year plan includes a $17.9 billion transportation capital plan administered by the State Department of Transportation (DOT), and a $17.9 billion Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) capital plan. The program, which will fund transportation needs through 2010, will help New York maintain and improve multiple elements of the State's transportation
infrastructure, including local roads and bridges, transit systems, the State's freight and passenger rail network, airports, canals, and ferry and port facilities.
