Senator Fuschillo Announces $200,000 In State Funding For Freeport

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) joined Governor George E. Pataki in announcing state funding for the Freeport Downtown Revitalization and Facade Improvement Program. The $200,000 grant will be utilized by the Community Development Corporation of Long Island as part of the State’s Main Street Program which is designed to stimulate downtown revitalization in communities by providing funding for building renovations, streetscape enhancements and downtown business or cultural anchors.

"Downtown areas are the heart of many communities and the entire Village of Freeport will benefit greatly from this program. The growth that will be accomplished with this funding will enhance the lives of the residents and enable business to grow throughout the Village. I am excited that the Village of Freeport will benefit from this state program and that the entire community will soon be able to enjoy these improvements."

The Freeport Downtown Revitalization and Facade Improvement Program has been an on-going effort since 1999 and targets the Village's traditional downtown and geographic center. The purpose of the program is to encourage economic development in the mixed-use setting of the Central Business District, to create and retain employment and reestablish the local tax base while preserving the historical design of the Central Business District through pedestrian-friendly development.

The New York Main Street Program, which is being administered by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal and the Housing Trust Fund Corporation, was launched by the Governor last year. The program provides matching grants for facade and interior building renovations, streetscape enhancements, landscaping and signage and to install street furniture, and for communities to establish a business or cultural anchor in their downtown.

"New York’s downtown business districts are the lifeblood of our cities, towns and villages," Governor Pataki said. "I am pleased to be here today to provide funding to assist the efforts of communities in Nassau County which have a clear vision and a commitment to investing resources to reinvigorate its Main Streets."
