Senator Fuschillo Calls For Veterans' "hall Of Fame"
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) joined with his Long Island colleagues in the New York State Senate to show his support for the creation of a New York State Veterans’ "Hall of Fame". Senator Fuschillo co-sponsored the legislation that would authorize the construction and operation of the hall.
The plan unanimously passed the legislature and is now on its way to Governor George Pataki. Over 200 veterans from all over Long Island joined with the Senate delegation at a rally held at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale to call for the Governor’s support.
"The talent it takes to get inducted into the baseball hall of fame is insignificant to the truly heroic efforts that we are seeking to honor with this movement. We all salute our American heroes on July 4th and Memorial Day, but New York needs a permanent reminder of the sacrifice that these men and women have made to sustain our way of life," said Senator Fuschillo. "This would not only be a fitting tribute to those who have fought in the past but an honor for those who are protecting us today."
The Hall, which would be only the fourth in the nation, would honor legendary leaders and everyday soldiers whose deeds and accomplishments both in combat and in civilian life merit special commendation. This would include the 663 New Yorkers that have earned the Congressional Medal of Honor, a number unrivaled throughout the other 49 states.
The plan for the hall of fame calls for the creation of an 18-member council of veterans from across the state which will determine the location and design of the facility and establish the rules for nominating and inducting veterans.
