Senator Fuschillo Provides State Grant For Autism Research
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced today that he secured a $25,000 state grant for the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR) of Long Island. NAAR will use the funding for Autism research.
"Great strides in autism research have been made over the last few years. This funding will help NAAR continue their worthy mission," said Senator Fuschillo, a member of the State Senate’s Health Committee.
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. The result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain, autism impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Patients typically have difficulties interacting with others, communicating both verbally and non-verbally, and engaging in leisure or play activities.
Founded in 1994, the National Alliance for Autism Research was the first nationwide, nonprofit organization of its kind. Its network of volunteers and supporters work to support biomedical research and science-based approaches that seek to determine the causes, prevention, effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure for autism spectrum disorders.
"Words cannot express the gratitude my husband and I have to Senator Fuschillo for sponsoring legislation proclaiming April as Autism Awareness Month and for his very generous support in securing a $25,000 grant to help the National Alliance for Autism Research in its mission to fund research," said Allison Giangregorio, NAAR volunteer and wife of NAAR Walk Chair Michael Giangregorio. "Senator Fuschillo has supported the NAAR's efforts for the past several years which proves his commitment to improving the lives of the many thousands of individuals living on Long Island affected by autism."
