On May 26th, Senator Skelos will hold a public hearing at the Valley Stream North High School to solicit the involvement and recommendations of Long Island educators, law enforcement, community leaders and other advocates regarding the need to update and strengthen Megan’s Law. As Senator Skelos wrote and enacted New York State’s Megan’s Law ten years ago, the May 26th hearing and an earlier forum at the State Capitol in Albany will provide the basis for a comprehensive Megan’s Law Reform Act to be considered by the Senate in June.

Principally, Senator Skelos’ public hearings are focused on the need for (1) lifetime registration, (2) mandatory community notification, (3) global positioning system tracking, (4) civil commitment and (5) electronic dissemination of information, including the availability of information about all sex offenders on the state website and e-mail notification to concerned members of the community. Maureen Kanka was the first person to testify at the Albany hearing and Laura Ahearn, Executive Director of Parents for Megan’s Law, is scheduled to begin the Long Island hearing.
