Skelos Honors Point Lookout's Susan Gordon Ryan As A 2005 "woman Of Distinction"

On Tuesday, June 14th, New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) honored Susan Gordon Ryan as his 2005 "Woman of Distinction" at the State Senate’s 8th Annual "Women of Distinction" ceremony in Albany.

"The ‘Women of Distinction’ program is a celebration of New York State’s women, their accomplishments and the difference they’ve made in the lives of others," said Senator Skelos. "Susan is a role model and an inspiration to those that know her and those that have benefited from her hard work. I’m very appreciative of all the great work that she has done and her contribution to our community."

A resident of Point Lookout, Susan Gordon Ryan has dedicated herself to improving the rights of people with disabilities and currently serves as the Vice President of Development at the National Center for Disability Services. Ms. Ryan founded the "Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged." This is a fitness and competition program for people with disabilities serving approximately 2,000 children each year. As a woman with a disability, she was able to use her personal and professional background to develop this unique and innovative program that is celebrating its 21st year. In the past, Susan has held a variety of professional positions in the fields of education, government and social services benefiting individuals with disabilities.

"I would like to thank Senator Skelos for nominating me for this award," said Susan Gordon Ryan. "It was a great honor to be acknowledged by all of the Senators and all of the distinguished women who were present." Susan Gordon Ryan’s mother-in-law was the first women elected to the other Assembly. Aileen B. Ryan served in the Assembly from 1958 to 1965. "I kind of felt her presence there, she would be very proud of me."
