Senator Farley Announces Local Quiz Available For Nys History Month

November is New York State History Month and State Senator Hugh T. Farley (R,C - Schenectady) is offering a local history quiz booklet.

"New York State, and particularly this region -- Fulton, Montgomery, Saratoga and Schenectady counties -- has a rich heritage ranging from its role in the American Revolution, to the economic impact of the Erie Canal, to the innovations of local industries," Senator Farley said.

"Did you know that Fulton County is the home of the oldest operating courthouse, which is located in the county seat of Johnstown? It was built by Sir William Johnson to serve what was then known as Tryon County. The region was then named Montgomery County in 1784. Fulton County was later established as a separate county in 1938. Did you know the Rice Homestead in Mayfield was built around 1790 by Oliver Rice, who had served under General George Washington during the American Revolution? These are some of the many fascinating local facts in the booklet," Senator Farley said.

"I designed this fun quiz to be an opportunity to encourage children and adults alike to appreciate and learn more about our region's past," Senator Farley said. "Hopefully, people will take this learning experience one step further and visit some of our area's historic sites and museums."

"As part of History Month, I am encouraging children to share their knowledge with others by submitting a history question that can be posted on my website," said Senator Farley. "To participate, children should mail me their question, the answer, and the source where they obtained their information (such as the book or website used). Children should also include their name, grade and school name so they can receive recognition for their participation.
