Little Falls Companies Get Cheaper Power

Burrows Paper Corp. and Little Falls Hospital were approved for reallocations of cheaper electricity to run their operations, Senator James L. Seward said today.

Seward said that Burrows Paper was awarded 1000 kilowatts (kw) of cheaper energy in order to retain 83 salaried jobs and 122 hourly positions. Burrows, a maker of specialty tissues, has payroll impact on the community of more than $6 million.

Little Falls Hospital was granted 150 kw in order to keep 278 full-time equivalent positions, including 30 salaried positions and 248 hourly positions.

Companies typically pay 25 to 30 percent less for their electricity under the "Power for Jobs" program authored by Seward when he was chairman of the Senate Energy Committee.

The companies’ applications were approved by state Economic Development Power Allocation Board, which met Tuesday (10/18) in White Plains to make a final decision.

"The companies will receive continuing cheap electricity as a result of legislation I developed which created the ‘Power for Jobs’ program The goal of the law is to help reduce energy costs for employers so that they can save local jobs and possibly even add some," Seward said. "Electricity can be an employer’s biggest expense. By making cheaper power available, we can help keep jobs right in our local communities."

The energy is allocated through the New York Power Authority.
