Oneonta Group In Line For State Award

The Greater Oneonta Historical Society will be getting state help to rehab the façade of its historic building on Main Street in Oneonta, Senator James L. Seward said today.

Seward will officially unveil a $50,000 legislative grant at the society’s annual banquet on Wednesday, October 5, at the Oneonta Country Club. Dinner will precede the presentation set for 7:15 p.m.

"The society has embarked on a program that would restore the Main Street building -- the oldest brick building in Oneonta -- to its original condition, with a 1920s façade," Senator Seward said. "It can certainly be a key part of enriching the city’s downtown atmosphere and highlighting the city’s history and its significant architecture."

Any balance in the funding will be used for exhibition and program space at the society’s location.

"I applaud the members of the society for their commitment and efforts to keep our history alive," Seward added. "The reconstruction of the office will be a tremendous addition to the downtown area."

The funding, from the 2004-2005 state budget, will be administered by the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
