Senator Robach Encourages Students To Participate In Dr. Martin Luther King Essay Contest

I would like to inform you and your students about an upcoming essay and fine arts contest honoring Dr. Martin Luther King.

New York State schools are invited to submit student essays and artwork based on Dr. King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence. The categories are writing, painting, drawing, sculpting and photography. All entries received will be placed on display for viewing one week prior to the King Observance on January 16, 2006 in Albany, New York at the Empire State Plaza. The concept of the display is:

To encourage students to learn more about Dr. King, his nonviolent philosophy and its application to current issues.

To introduce students to the concept and methodology of Dr. King's "Six Principles and Steps of Nonviolence."

To encourage students to examine current concerns and offer creative solutions using nonviolent means.

To encourage the development and utilization of creative skills in the arts as a means of illustrating change.

To empower students to pursue change through nonviolent methods.

Please encourage your students to take part in the Empire State’s celebration of Dr. King’s life and ideals. All entries must be postmarked by December 9, 2005.
