Senator Robach Honors Dr. Ruth Scott With Woman Of Distinction Award

Senator Joseph E. Robach presented Dr. Ruth Scott with the 2005 Senate Woman of Distinction Award on Tuesday as a part of the New York State Senate’s annual "Women of Distinction" ceremony in Albany.

"This award ceremony is a great opportunity for us to celebrate Dr. Scott’s long and distinguished record of community service as an educator, a political leader, a banker and a consultant," Robach said. "It is an honor and a privilege to present the 2005 Senate Woman of Distinction Award to Dr. Ruth Scott."

Dr. Scott was born in Albion, Michigan and attended Albion College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts (cum laude). She then went to Kent State University where she attained a Master of Education Degree, and then attended SUNY Brockport where she received a Certificate in Administration. In 1997, Alfred University awarded Dr. Scott the Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) and Albion College awarded her a Doctor of Sociology (Honoris Causa) in 2000.

Dr. Scott started her career as an educator teaching English. She held several positions in various districts in New York State until moving to Rochester in 1969. She served the Rochester City School District in various capacities until 1977.

Dr. Ruth Scott served on the Rochester City Council from 1977-89. In 1986, she was elected the Council’s first President. Her leadership was instrumental as the City moved from a City Manager form of government to a directly elected mayor.

Ruth also has experience in the banking field. She served as Rochester Community Savings Bank’s first Community Reinvestment officer.

Ruth is currently the owner of Scott Associates Consulting, Inc., which provides organizational effectiveness consulting for corporations, family firms and public sector organizations. She has been involved in numerous community organizations and has received countless awards, including; Who’s Who Among American Women, Who’s Who Among Black Americans, Albion College’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, Girl Scouts of America Community Service Award, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Citizen of the Year, and YWCA’s Women Builders of Communities and Dreams.

Dr. Scott lives in the 19th ward of the City of Rochester with her husband William. They have three grown children.
