Golden Leads Local Fight Against Illegal Postings

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, 22nd District) today is announcing that through his efforts, over 150 illegally posted handbills, advertising a moving company, have been removed along 5th Avenue in Bay Ridge, and violations will be issued by the New York City Department of Sanitation.

Senator Golden noticed an enormous amount of illegally posted flyers on lampposts along 5th Avenue in the vicinity of his District Office, located at 7403-5th Avenue, and contacted the Department of Sanitation to report these quality of life violations. The Department of Sanitation Enforcement Division’s Posting Unit conducted inspections on both April 8th and April 12th and observed the illegally posted handbills. Sanitation will continue to monitor the area for future violations.

Senator Marty Golden stated, "The presence of these illegal handbills posted along 5th Avenue was appalling and an eyesore for the 5th Avenue merchants, shoppers and residents. I commend the Department of Sanitation for their immediate attention to this complaint and for their cooperation, working with my office, in insuring that our neighborhood’s quality of life remains high quality."

Golden continued, "This community will not tolerate clear obstructions of the law. For years, these postings have been banned on lampposts within the confines of Community Board 10 and this will important regulation will continue to exist in the community."

In 2003, Senator Marty Golden led the passage of legislation which became law on November 1, 2003, which enforces the existing penalty for posting unsolicited material on automobiles by allowing sanitation police to fine the authors of the flyers as well as the distributors. Prior to this 2003 law, only a person caught by an officer of the police department in the act of posting a handbill could have been issued a violation.
