Statement By Senator Marty Golden On Bay Ridge Zoning Change Final Approval

Martin J. Golden

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden has issued the following statement following the City Council finalization of new zoning regulations for Bay Ridge:

"Today is a landmark day which finalizes our community’s efforts to preserve and protect the character and the future of the Bay Ridge community. I applaud the commitment and effort of the residents of this community and of Community Board 10, for their efforts have led to the establishment of contextual zoning here within the Bay Ridge Special District. Further, I thank Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the City Planning Commission for recognizing that the dangers this community faced at the hands of overdevelopment were very real and were negatively impacting our quality of life.

This new regulation has erased the inadequate zoning laws which have governed this community for too long. These protective measures have now been put in place and we will no longer see homes fall at the hands of developers. The destruction and devastation caused by overdevelopment has been brought to an end. As a neighborhood, we will again be able to rest easy, without fear, every time we see a "For Sale" sign placed on a lawn. We will no longer have to wonder what will be built and how the look and the feel of our block will change."
