Senator Nozzolio Announces Passage Of Legislation Prohibiting Distribution Of Certain Medications To Sex Offenders

Albany – Continuing his efforts to help protect our communities from dangerous sexual predators, New York State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio (R-Fayette) today announced that the State Senate passed legislation that he sponsored that would prohibit Medicaid and other drug and health programs from covering the expenses of sexual performance enhancing drugs, procedures, and supplies for convicted sex offenders. The bill (S. 5921) is part of a three way agreement announced by the Senate, the Assembly and the Governor.

“It was an outrage that high-risk sex offenders in New York State were receiving Viagra and other sexual performance enhancing drugs paid for by New York State taxpayers,” said Senator Nozzolio, Chairman of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Correction Committee. “This critical legislation will end the use of these drugs by dangerous sexual predators to fuel their sex drives. As a proud sponsor of this bill, I am extremely pleased with the bipartisan support that this measure has received.”

Included in the bill is the requirement for the Department of Health to be given full access to the sex offender registry to ensure that no convicted sex offender receives these types of drugs, procedures, or supplies at the public expense.
