Senator Saland Announces $16.2 Billion 2005-06 Education Budget Passes The Senate

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie), Chair, Senate Education Committee, today announced that the Senate has passed the 2005-06 Education budget legislation that provides $16.2 billion for schools statewide. This reflects an increase of $848 million in formula driven and other educational assistance to schools across New York State. The Budget adds $322 million to the Governor’s proposed $526 million increase over last year. The budget provides $20 million in additional funding for the School Tax Relief program (STAR). STAR in total amounts to $3.2 billion. This budget will increase Dutchess County school aid by $5.5 million.

The $848 million in additional school aid funding restores Governor’s cuts in BOCES and special education funding while increasing operating aid.

"I am pleased that our budget will provide schools with funding levels that will not only continue the programs vital to the quality of education available in Dutchess County but mitigate potential school tax increases," said Senator Steve Saland "The lower level of funding proposed in the Governor’s budget would have placed a financial burden on our local homeowners and businesses. Education funding continues to be our priority."

"This year’s on time budget will provide the additional benefit of giving Dutchess County school districts adequate time to plan for the coming year," said Senator Saland.

In addition, Senator Saland secured $500,000 for the City of Poughkeepsie Magnet Schools. The Senate’s 2005-06 education budget bill also provides additional funding for the public libraries operating aid ($4.4 million).
