Stephen M. Saland

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that a new federal law that will allow taxpayers to deduct any donations to tsunami relief efforts in Southeast Asia through January 31, 2005 on their 2004 federal tax return will also apply to residents filing 2004 New York State tax returns.

"This tragedy has resulted in generous donations by many who are anxious to help the victims in Southeast Asia," said Senator Saland. "I am pleased that these charitable donations will be reflected in our 2004 New York State tax returns."

In order to be able to deduct the charitable contributions taxpayers must itemize on their tax returns.
