Senator Saland Sponsors Legislation Which Passes The Senate To Prohibit Drivers From Viewing Videos While Driving

Stephen M. Saland

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that legislation he has sponsored (S.1310) to prohibit drivers from viewing videos while driving has passed the Senate. All videos, with the exception of global positioning or navigational systems, would be required to be out of sight of a driver.

Because many people now have devices such as DVD or VHS players installed in vehicles drivers are increasingly becoming distracted and putting themselves and others in great danger.

"This legislation would make certain that the use of video players in cars is not done at the expense of safety," said Senator Saland. "While we hope common sense would prevent drivers from viewing videos while driving, we need to be certain that our laws prohibit a practice that if left unchecked, may have deadly consequences."

The bill will now be sent to the Assembly.
