Senator Fuschillo And Assemblyman Mcdonough Join With Postal Service To "stamp Out Hunger"
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) and Assemblyman David G. McDonough (19th Assembly District) today helped to "stamp out hunger" by participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) 14th annual food drive.
The NALC "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive is the nation’s largest one-day food drive. According to the United States Postal Service, almost 1,500 local NALC branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands collected food donations left by mailboxes and in Post Offices. The food is then delivered to local community food banks, pantries and shelters. Since its inception in 1993 the "Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive" has collected over half a billion pounds of food for Americans in need, including 71 million pounds in 2005.
This year, the food drive will take place on Saturday May 13th. Residents who would like to donate food can place nonperishable items in a bag near their mailbox. A letter carrier will then pick it up and deliver it to a local food bank.
"Every year, our letter carriers put in a tremendous amount of work to make this food drive a success. Through their efforts, local food banks and pantries are able to replenish their resources for the summer months, ensuring that individuals who have fallen on hard times will not be forced to go hungry," said Senator Fuschillo. "I am proud to assist them in this very worthwhile cause."
