Senator Fuschillo Honors Merrick Little League's Championship Team In State Capitol

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) recently welcomed the players and coaches of the Merrick Little League’s 12 year old team to the State Capitol, where they were honored for winning the 2005 New York State Championship. The team defeated East Greenbush in the finals last summer to capture the first State Championship for 12 year olds in Merrick’s 55 year history.

The team spent an eventful day in Albany, which began in the Senate Chambers where they were greeted by Senator Fuschillo. After meeting Lieutenant Governor Mary Donohue, they got to view a live session of the Senate, where they were recognized with the reading of a resolution in their honor, which Senator Fuschillo sponsored.

Following a lunch with Senator Fuschillo, Assemblyman David G. McDonough (19th Assembly District) and Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (17th Assembly District), the coaches, players, and parents took a guided tour of the State Capitol building, which was followed by a meeting with Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno in the Majority Conference room. The team then had the chance to meet Miss Teen New York State 2005, Tara Somersall.

The day concluded with a visit from Governor George Pataki in the Governor’s reception area. The Governor congratulated each player and signed a team bat as a memento of the visit.

The team consisted of Joseph Christopher, Josh Nigro, Patrick Murphy, Jake Thomas, Justin Harrison, Nick Marcello, Robert Stalzer, Evan Krohn, Joseph Saladino, Justin Fields, and Ross Weitzman. They were lead by Manager Paul Christopher and Coaches Brooks Thomas, Gary Weitzman, Ed Stalzer, and Dave Marcello.

"Winning a state championship is an incredible accomplishment. The boys on the Merrick Little League’s 12 year old team worked extremely hard to achieve this goal, going through 55 team practices, and having to defeat some very tough teams. This truly is a remarkable achievement that is certainly worthy of recognition. I hope that the team really enjoyed their moment in the spotlight here in Albany," said Senator Fuschillo.
