Senator Fuschillo Provides Information For Veterans Now At Risk Of Id Theft
In light of the news that 26.5 million veterans are now at risk for identity theft due to the theft of electronic federal records containing their Social Security Numbers and birth dates, Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) is urging all veterans to take steps to prevent identity theft.
"Identity theft is the number one consumer crime in New York State. As a victim of identity theft myself, I know all too well about the problems it can create. I urge all veterans who think they may be at risk to take immediate steps to prevent any damage to their credit," said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Consumer Protection Committee.
Senator Fuschillo has created a section on his website that will provide veterans with links to information about who is at risk, where to report suspicious and unusual activity, and what steps they should take to help protect themselves from falling victim to identity theft. In addition, Senator Fuschillo urged veterans to review their credit reports. Under federal law, consumers are entitled to one free copy of their credit report per year from each of the 3 major credit bureaus. CLICK HEREto obtain a free copy of your credit report.
Senator Fuschillo also called upon the federal government to pass a law similar to the one he authored in New York State last year that requires individuals to be notified when their private information may have been stolen. This allows consumers to take steps to prevent becoming victimized by identity theft.
"In these instances, people who are at risk should be notified immediately so that they can take steps to prevent or minimize any damage to their credit. This is already a law in New York State, and this incident only illustrates the need for the federal government to enact this common sense law to protect consumers," Senator Fuschillo added.
