Senator Fuschillo Secures State Funding For Computer Literacy Program In Suffolk County
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) announced today that he secured $20,000 in state grant funding for the Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) of Suffolk, Inc. The funding will help defray the costs of the Center’s computer literacy programs.
"Computer literacy is a vital and necessary skill to have, especially in the workplace," said Senator Fuschillo. "The programs offered by OIC of Suffolk will help open the door to new and better opportunities by teaching individuals these important skills."
"OIC depends on the assistance of individuals like Senator Fuschillo to help us continue providing critical job skills at minimal cost to the students," stated Florence Joyner, Executive Director of OIC of Suffolk, Inc. "This grant and others like it allow OIC to reach community members who normally would not have access to these programs. Armed with the skills we provide, our students are prepared to meet ever-increasing workplace challenges and better provide for themselves and their families."
OIC of Suffolk provides computer literacy programs for local residents. The programs teach participants keyboarding and other basic computer skills, including the use of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. These skills allow participants to be competitive and technologically savvy members of the workforce.
In an effort to ensure that young people are able to negotiate the fast-paced world of information technology, OIC of Suffolk also provides introductory computer classes for children.
In addition, long-term certification programs are offered in the fields of medical billing, computer repair, and customer service. Courses in resume writing, basic job skills and preparation for the notary public exam are also part of the OIC curriculum.
