Senators Fuschillo And Hannon Announce Traffic Improvements At Intersection Of Newbridge Road And East Meadow Avenue
Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) and Senator Kemp Hannon (6th Senate District) announced today that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) will be making improvements at the intersection of Newbridge Road (Route 106) and East Meadow Avenue to help ease the flow of traffic.
Additional vehicle detectors will be installed along the southbound side of East Meadow Avenue. Vehicle detectors are designed to sense when traffic is waiting so that the timing of the green light can be extended. This will reduce the amount of time that drivers will have to wait to turn onto Newbridge Road from East Meadow Avenue.
The DOT decided to install the devices after conducting a traffic study of the site. The investigation was requested by Senators Fuschillo and Hannon in response to calls from their constituents regarding driving conditions in the area.
The DOT’s investigation determined that a "Do Not Block Side Road" sign near that intersection requires some drivers heading south on East Meadow Avenue to stop outside the current detection zone. This sometimes resulted in waiting vehicles not getting sufficient green time to access Newbridge Road in one signal cycle.
"I am happy to do what I can to alleviate commuter stress for Long Islanders. After review and consultation with DOT we found the best solution to the Newbridge Road and East Meadow Avenue problem was to simply install additional vehicle detectors," said Senator Hannon. "I am glad we were able to work together to resolve this issue for our residents."
"The new improvements being made by the DOT will enable traffic to flow more smoothly and reduce the amount of time that drivers will have to spend sitting at a red light waiting to make a turn," said Senator Fuschillo. "Working together, we were able to solve a quality of life issue that was extremely important to our constituents."
