Skelos Attends The 30th Anniversary Of The Stephanie Joyce Kahn Foundation
Senator Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) attended the 30th anniversary of the Stephanie Joyce Kahn Foundation on Thursday, May 4, 2006. Senator Skelos presented two Legislative Resolutions honoring the Stephanie Joyce Kahn Foundation for 30 years of extraordinary work and congratulating Stephanie Joyce Kahn upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2006 SJK Lifetime Angel Award. In addition, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg and his wife, Ellen, were honored at the event for their outstanding work throughout the years with the SJK Foundation.
"Stephanie Joyce Kahn is an inspiration to us all," said Senator Skelos. "Her dedication and unwavering compassion has helped the lives of many disabled people. She gives hope to those who feel there is no hope and she reminds everyone of the power of the spoken word to heal people."
In its first year, the SJK Foundation provided free talking books to 2,000 patients. Today, it reaches 4,000 patients. The program provides the missing link to a "holistic" approach to medical care by addressing the emotional needs of patients, thereby promoting a positive mental attitude which speeds up the recovery period of the critically ill, and increases the longevity of the elderly.
Under the skilled leadership of Stephanie Joyce Kahn, the SJK Foundation began with a Board of Directors and 50 volunteers; today, it is a nationally acclaimed Listening Therapy Program for both hospitalized and homebound patients. The goal of the program is to entertain patients, making their recovery process more speedy and enjoyable. The listening library includes books, magazines, classic radio shows, inspirational materials and music, as well as a variety of material for children.
