Skelos Honors Marguerite Izzo Of Malverne For Being The New York State Teacher Of The Year

New York State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) presented a joint Legislative Resolution honoring the accomplishments of Malverne’s Marguerite Izzo upon her selection as the 2007 New York State Teacher of the Year. In choosing the New York State Teacher of the Year, the state Board of Regents engages in a lengthy evaluation process which includes evaluating teacher portfolios and conducting personal interviews. In addition to the Board of Regents, teachers’ unions and school officials’ groups participate in the determination of this prestigious award. Being selected as New York State Teacher of the Year qualifies Marguerite Izzo for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

"It’s a privilege and an honor to represent an outstanding teacher like Marguerite Izzo," said Senator Skelos. "Teachers shape our children’s future and we’re very fortunate to have Ms. Izzo and other tremendous teachers in Malverne."

Marguerite Izzo is a fifth-grade teacher at Herber Middle School in the Malverne Union Free School District. Ms. Izzo has taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels for the past twenty-nine years, and is a member of the adjunct faculty at Adelphi University. Marguerite received her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Stony Brook and her master’s degree from Adelphi University.

Throughout her career, Marguerite has been actively involved in the community. She is a member of the Parent-Teacher Association, providing an example of involvement to her students and their parents. Marguerite has also served on the Policy Board of the Malverne Teachers Center where she was instrumental in providing continuing education for teachers. To promote the importance of reading to people of all ages, Ms. Izzo is a member of the Malverne Public Library’s Board of Trustees, an Adult Great Books Discussion Leader and involved with Momma’s House.

Marguerite Izzo has been recognized for her excellence in teaching by many groups, including her own school, who named her the 2005-2006 Teacher of the Year. Her philosophy on teaching is simple and powerful, "Every child must first be treated with respect before any real learning can take place."
