Senate Approves Winner-Bacalles Legislation Honoring Pearl Harbor Veterans

Albany, N.Y.-- The New York State Senatehas approved legislation sponsored by Senator George H. Winner, Jr. (R-C, Elmira) to designate a portion of State Route 36 in Steuben County, between North Hornell and the Livingston County line, as the "Pearl Harbor Veterans Memorial Highway."

The legislation is sponsored in the Assembly by Assemblyman Jim Bacalles (R-C, Corning). Winner and Bacalles introduced the legislation at the request of the Steuben County Legislature, which adopted a resolution late last year asking for state authorization to make the dedication.

"The Steuben County Legislature continues to recognize the service of area veterans in all of our nation’s wars and conflicts and would like to dedicate a portion of State Route 36 in tribute to local veterans who served during the attack on Pearl Harbor. It’s my great privilege to join Assemblyman Bacalles in recognizing our Pearl Harbor veterans," Winner said.

The Steuben County Legislature’s resolution read, in part, ". . .Steuben County and the State of New York are proud to have Pearl Harbor veterans residing within its borders who have served with merit and distinction during World War II. . . It is desirable and appropriate to recognize the contributions made by the veterans of Pearl Harbor, and to dedicate that section of New York State Route 36 located within the County of Steuben, from North Hornell to the Livingston County line, and to memorialize said dedication with appropriate plaques."

If approved by the Assembly and signed into law by Governor George Pataki, the state Department of Transportation will be authorized to install and maintain ceremonial signing along State Route 36 designating the stretch of roadway as the "Pearl Harbor Veterans Memorial Highway."
