State Legislature Adopts Resolution Honoring Eileen Collins
Albany, N.Y.-- TheNew York State Legislature has unanimously adopted an official Legislative Resolution, sponsored by State Senator George H. Winner, Jr. (R-C, Elmira) and Assemblyman Tom O'Mara (R-C, Horseheads), honoring the career of astronaut and Elmira native Eileen Collins.
It was announced last week that Collins is retiring from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) following a long and illustrious career highlighted by her command of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 1999 and last year’s "Return to Flight" Discovery mission.
"This recognition by the New York State Legislature is a fitting tribute to Eileen Collins, and I’m honored to sponsor it. She is one of the best and brightest of all American citizens," said Winner. "We are incredibly proud in Elmira to consider Eileen as one of our own, and we value these opportunities to honor her life and career. We look forward to many more occasions to express our pride."
The resolution, which touches on the many highlights of Collins’ career,reads, in part, ‘It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and publicly acknowledge the significant milestones of those individuals from this noble Empire State who have distinguished themselves through their exemplary careers, pioneering spirit and purposeful lives."
