Senate Okays Greene Veterans’ Highway Bill

James L. Seward

Legislation renaming a portion of state route 23 in honor of Greene County’s veterans has cleared the state senate, Senator James L. Seward said today. Senate bill 6420B was approved unanimously by the senate on April 24.

"The bill was requested by local veterans associations and the Greene County Legislature, and I commend the county legislature for seeking an appropriate tribute to the veterans of the county who fought to keep our country free," Seward said. "Our veterans answered their country’s call, and we honor them for their sacrifices and their service in the navy, army, air force, coast guard and marines."

The bill, sponsored by Senator Seward in the senate and Assemblyman Hooker in the assembly, renames a piece of route 23 from the Rip Van Winkle bridge in Catskill west to Cairo where 23 intersects route 145. Its formal title will be the "Greene County Veterans’ Memorial Highway."

The measure is pending in the assembly. It will have to be approved by the assembly and signed into law by the governor before it takes effect.
