Bonacic's "access To Homes" Bill Signed Into Law

State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/I/C - Mount Hope) announced today that the Governor has approved his legislation that will assist low and moderate income persons with disabilities and disabled veterans in making their homes handicap accessible.

"Persons with disabilities must overcome challenges that others often take for granted, even simple tasks such as the ability to reside in one's own home," stated Senator Bonacic. "This program will assist individuals with the costs of necessary modifications for accessibility."

Senator Bonacic's bill overwhelmingly passed both houses of the Legislature with bipartisan support. The Senator said that many people with disabilities and disabled veterans are forced to reside in institutions because they are unable to afford to make the appropriate accessibility alterations to their own residences. Providing the financial support needed will allow persons with disabilities to reside in their own home as opposed to in an institution--a cost savings and quality of life benefit for both the State and many of its most vulnerable citizens.

New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal Commissioner Judith Calogero stated, "This new law reflects the resolve of the Governor and the Legislature to provide housing alternatives for seniors and persons with physical disabilities or sensory impairments who wish to live independently. We are grateful to Senator Bonacic for his support in the creation of this program, as well as his sponsorship of this measure in the Senate. For many, the adaptations provided through the Access to Home Program will mean the difference between living at home and entering a nursing home."
