Senator Bonacic Honors Fallen Firefighters
State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/I/C - Mount Hope), along with firefighters, their families and friends, today honored those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
"Our firefighters leave their jobs and their family to save the lives and property of others. They perform heroic services, often for no pay and with a substantial risk to their own lives, and deserve our support, thanks, and to be remembered," stated Senator Bonacic.
Senator Bonacic said, each year, New York State holds a special ceremony at the Fallen Firefighters Memorial to recognize the sacrifices of fallen firefighters. During this year's ceremony, 25 names were added to the Wall of Honor, which now features the names of 2,312 firefighters.
"Todd Smith of New Paltz and Robert Brooks of Montgomery were among the names added to the Wall of Honor this year. Their families, friends, and fellow firefighters were here in Albany and together, we honored these brave men and their families who lost their lives much too early," continued Senator Bonacic. "Todd Smith died of a heart attack at age 31 while answering an emergency call. Robert Brooks was 42 years old when he suffered an aneurysm and died during a training exercise."
Senator Bonacic concluded, "It is with great pride, appreciation, and a heavy heart that I attended this solemn event to honor our heroes and their families. We will never forget their courage and sacrifice for all of us."
