Senator Flanagan Applauds Repeal Of Dmv's Inspection Expiration Plan

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has rescinded a new vehicle inspection program due to in part to the Senate’s intervention. The policy, which had been in effect since January, had sought to divide monthly inspections into three segments that would have provided motorists with a mere ten day window to renew their inspection.

The new inspection stickers would have expired in the first, second or third portion of the month and New York residents would only have that ten day period to have their automobile inspected. DMV’s repeal now permits motorists to enjoy the full month grace period they had under the previous policy.

"This policy would have placed an extra burden on the drivers of our state and that is unacceptable. The DMV needs to make complying with the rules of the road more convenient and avoid enacting policies that would have complicated a system that has already proven to be effective," stated Senator Flanagan. "This was a flawed plan from the beginning and its cancellation is good for all drivers. I applaud the department for rescinding this policy and for acting on behalf of the residents of the state."

To ensure that this policy is unaltered in the future, Senator Flanagan is supporting legislation that would require the DMV to allow motorists an entire month for inspection. The proposed legislation would ensure that the DMV does not initiate a partial month inspection program in the future.

Any motorist who had their automobile inspected under the partial month policy will be able to have their automobile inspected at any time during the month it expires. Just as in previous years, this ensures them the full month long grace period regardless of the date specified on the sticker.
