Celebrating Mexican Culture

State Senator Jose M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) attended a Day of the Dead celebration at Union Settlement Houses on 104th Street. Day of the Dead originated in Mexico as a way to honor deceased relatives, and celebrate their lives.

"The Mexican people have made such great contributions to this country," said the Senator. "It's always a pleasure for me to share in their rich cultural heritage."

The Union Settlement event featured a full-course dinner with tamales, mole poblano, tostadas and atole. In the second-floor gymnasium, visitors were treated to elaborate Day of the Dead altars. Decorations included the orange marigold known as cempazuchil, and the traditional skulls, or calaveras.
