Senator Golden And Scholastic Inc. Celebrate New York Library Week At P.s. 48 Library
Brooklyn-Senator Martin Golden today met with 3rd Grade students of Public School 48 in the school library to celebrate New York Library Week. To commemorate the celebration, Scholastic Inc., the global children’s publishing, education, and media company, donated a book, entitled "My Name is Stilton, Geronimo Stilton" to every student of the 3rd grade. The students took turns reading to Senator Golden and Senator Golden in turn read "Green Eggs and Ham" to the students at their request.
"This week is about cultivating a love of reading," said Senator Golden. "It’s important for children to see the wonders that come out of storytelling. With so many other entertainment forms out there for young people it’s critical we stress the importance of reading-- it has the potential to open new worlds to many of these children and I’m grateful to Scholastic for its generosity, its thoughtfulness and its inspiration."
"Public libraries and access to quality books can give children from all walks of life the opportunity to become better readers and successful students," said Greg Worrell, President of Scholastic Library Publishing. "Scholastic is pleased to team up with Senator Golden in celebrating New York Library Week with a book donation to help enrich the lives of Brooklyn’ young learners."
"As we celebrate National Library Week, we need to recognize the role that libraries play in providing life-long learning to all members of our society, both young and old. School libraries especially play a key role in instilling a love of reading in young children that will have a positive impact over a life-time," said Michael J. Borges, Executive Director of the New York Library Association. "We are grateful for Senator Golden’s support for libraries and the important role they play in assisting people of all ages in the pursuit of life-long learning."
The New York State Senate passed a resolution commemorating National Library Week and memorialized April 2nd-8th as New York State Library Week. After the reading, Senator Golden presented P.S. 48 Librarian Anita Quaglione with a copy of the Senate resolution.
