Senator Golden Announces P.s. 170 Students Win Statewide Environmental Competition

Brooklyn- State Senator Marty Golden (R-C-1, 22nd District) today is announcing that students from Public School 170 are third place winners in the 15th annual "I*MA*GREEN*NATION" Celebration, a statewide competition that encourages student awareness of environmental issues.

"Our local winners competed against hundreds of students from throughout New York State, and their imaginative ideas and displays were judged to be among the best in this year’s contest," said Senator Marty Golden "I know that our entire community shares my pride in these young people who have shown a remarkable awareness and concern for the important environmental challenges that we all face to make our state a better, cleaner place to live."

The statewide competition pitted students from Grades One through Eight against other schools for presentation of ideas and solutions to the problems of solid waste reduction and encouraging recycling. Entries were judged for imagination, subject matter and creativity.

The winners are from Dianne Gounardes’s class: Batou Ahemed-Khoudja, Ashely Alma, Rana Alwab, Patrick Chen, Veronica Galvez, Ruah Hassan, Michelle Hung, Toka Hussein, Scott Jokinsky, Stavroula Kotsanis, Janice Kumar, Ismail Lamrini, Alison Lin, Saly Mohamed, Ashwag Mokbel, Alba Morales, Love Pal, Fanny Pavlakis, Cayla Perez, Maria Tsororos, James Vankoeverden, Dina Abdelslame, and Srrour Ahmed.

The winners also include: Niaz Alam, Dong Chen, Lily Chen, Elise Davidson, Jefferson Fernandez, Shannon Fitzpatrick, Jazmin Gil, Peter Hansen, Arlinda Hassanbelli, Melissa Huerta, Aya Ibrahim, Renata Krezeptowska, Venisha Kumar, Sandra Li, Jessica Lin, Anthony Ly, Lana Nabsoulsi, Veronica Polyakov, Paloma Ramos, Nayomi Serrano, Amanda Sultan, Tiffany Tang, Jenny Yang, Haifa Youchaa, Anita Yung, Jenny Wong, Roger Wu, Anthony Zu.

Senator Golden concluded, "‘I*MA*GREEN*NATION’encourages youngsters to take an interest in their environment and to use their imagination and creativity to identify challenges that face our community and offer their insights on possible solutions. The children of Public School 170 clearly understand and have mastered ways that they can have an impact on making New York a cleaner, more livable state. Senator Golden will host an awards assembly at the school on June 2, 2006.
