Senator Saland Overrides Vetoes To Provide Relief To Hudson Valley Taxpayers

Senator Steve Saland (R,C Poughkeepsie) today announced that he and his colleagues in the New York Senate have overriden 193 of the Governor’s budget vetoes in order to provide critically important relief to hardworking, overburdened taxpayers, as well as make critical restorations to health care, higher education, job development and other important areas. "I would have welcomed negotiations with the Governor, but faced with a 'take-it-or-leave-it' posture taken by the Governor, our option was to do what the State Constitution provides us the ability to do - override vetoes," Saland said.

"My Senate Majority colleagues and I made tax relief for New York's hardworking men and women a top budget priority," Senator Saland said. "As such, I voted to cut more than $500 million in new taxes and fees proposed by the Governor and for $4.1 billion in tax relief that would put money back into pockets of overburdened taxpayers."

Saland said that the budget was negotiated in an open, public process after hearing input from individuals across New York state, and it reflects the need for tax relief and job development.

"These veto overrides not only sustains our commitment to ease the tax burden that New Yorkers are experiencing, but sustains our commitment to such quality of life issues as education, health care, higher education and economic development," Saland concluded.
