Senator Announces Grants To Justice Courts

Thomas P. Morahan

New York State Senator Thomas P. Morahan today announced that 5 justice courts in Rockland County and 2 in Orange County will be receiving funding under the State's Justice Court Assistance Program.

"I look forward to the continued operation of the Justice Court Assistance Program and to working closely with New York State's Chief Administrative Judge to ensure that justice courts, 'the courts closest to the people,' remain an integral component of our system of justice, " said Morahan.

Justice courts date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and continue to provide residents of smaller communities with justice. Justice Courts enforce traffic laws, ensure that crime victims are protected, and provide citizens with an inexpensive forum for the resolution of small claims matters.

Morahan indicated the state grants will enable the following communities to facilitate their operations and purchase needed equipment:

ROCKLAND

Ÿ Town of Haverstraw $1,256.33

Ÿ Village of Piermont $5,221.87

Ÿ Village of South Nyack $ 199.00

Ÿ Village of Spring Valley $ 5,870.00

Ÿ Village of West Haverstraw $ 2,506.33

ORANGE

Ÿ Town of Tuxedo $ 1,158.28

Ÿ Village of Greenwood Lake $ 2,300.00
