Senator Andrew Lanza Appointed To Senate Task Force On Port Security

Senator Andrew Lanza was today named a member of the Senate Task Force on Port Security. This important task force was created to investigate issues related to the security of New York’s ports and the maritime transportation system.

The task force was initially created in 2006 to review the controversial take over of several U.S. shipping ports by a foreign company based in the United Arab Emirates. Shortly after its creation, the task force introduced legislation to strengthen the investigative powers of the Waterfront Commission, and to expand the Commission’s ability to revoke or deny the licenses of port employees with organized-crime or terrorist ties. The bills were passed with unanimous support in both houses and signed into law by the Governor.

Senator Lanza said, "Our ports are one of our biggest vulnerabilities so it is critical that we identify the issues related to their security. The tragic events of September 11th showed us that we need to be vigilant and proactive. This task force will ask questions, seek answers and offer solutions to ensure the safety of our ports and maritime transportation."

"Being situated at the entrance to New York harbor together with our port at Howland Hook, the safety of Staten Island is critically dependent upon strong port security measures. This task force will address issues important to Staten Island which is why I am glad to accept this appointment," Senator Lanza concluded.

The Senate Task Force on Port Security will be chaired by Senator Frank Padavan, and will include Senator Leibell, Senator Maltese, Senator Golden, Senator Flanagan and Senator Volker.
