Mta Lirr Completes Installation Of Cameras At Syosset Station As Part Of Safety Enhancement Efforts

As a result of a NYS Senate Grant secured by Senator Carl M. Marcellino, (R-Syosset), the MTA Long Island Rail Road has completed the installation of 24 closed circuit television cameras and six video monitors at the Syosset Station as part of the LIRR’s safety enhancement efforts at the station. Twelve cameras and three monitors are in service on each of the station’s two platforms.

Trains trigger sensors that activate the new camera observation system which provide views on the monitors of the entire platform to train conductors stationed in the second or forth car of all trains. The camera view of both entire platforms allow train crews to observe customers boarding and disembarking from trains on the platforms, including the curved sections, adding another safety measure to those already taken at this station.

The funding for the new camera monitoring system was provided through a $1.3 million state grant from Senator Carl Marcellino.

Senator Marcellino said, "As additional corrective actions are taken by the LIRR to reduce gap problems at the Syosset station, these cameras will give conductors a full view of the platform and gap to ensure commuters are safe prior to the train leaving the station."

LIRR Acting President Ray Kenny said the safety of all customers is a top priority. Kenny added, "We will continue our efforts to address safety concerns expressed by our customers and public officials. The Syosset Station presented certain challenges which I thank Senator Marcellino for helping us to address."

Efforts already taken at Syosset Station to enhance safety include shifting platform slabs closer to the tracks, installing platform edge boards on the westbound platform to help close the distance between train door and platform edge, platform conductors at the station during rush hours to assist customers and installation of special Watch the Gap signs.

Approximately 2,500 customers use the Syosset Station during the morning peak hours.
