Islanders Rally For Justice For Louisiana's "jena Six"
Demonstrations in support of the group of teenagers dubbed the “Jena 6” were held around the borough Thursday.
The six African American students are being charged with attempted murder in Jena, Louisiana.
Clergy members were joined by local politicians and the Island's National Association for the Advancement of Colored People chapter Thursday night to speak out what many are calling a double standard of the prosecution for black and whites.
The demonstration outside Borough Hall caught the eyes of many Islanders coming off the ferry from work as leaders spoke out against inequalities in the justice system.
Councilman Michael McMahon, Senator Diane Savino, and Assemblyman Matthew Titone pledged to hold the United States Justice Department accountable for the incident.
