Senator Flanagan Helps Bring Better Facilities To Northport Va Golfers

John J. Flanagan

Senator John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) recently joined the golfers and veterans at the Northport VA Medical Center in Northport to unveil a number of improvements for the benefit of those who use the golf course. Senator Flanagan secured $50,000 in state funding to offset the cost of the changes that are in place and for ongoing alterations to the recreational facility.

This funding continues Senator Flanagan's efforts to help improve the course at the facility and builds on his cooperative effort with the American Legion Post 694 VA Golf.

The nine-hole golf course is opened to the public but is mainly designed for veterans and seniors who enjoy the leisurely pace. While the golf course has been open since 1927, it was ignored until course management was handed over to the Northport American Legion Post 694 over a decade ago. Since then, the course has been restored and operates on the income generated by greens fees, grants and private donations.

During the recent visit, Senator Flanagan was provided with a tour of the improvements by Chairman Buonpane. These changes include:

- A new patio deck with seating and tables that overlooks the course

- Improvements to the gardens surrounding the clubhouse

- A sprinkler system that will enhance the look of area around the clubhouse

-Various other improvements to the golf course

"The new additions give the golf course a country club feel and when we went to Senator Flanagan for assistance, he came through like the gentleman he is," said VA Golf Chairman Mario Buonpane. "Golf is the one sport that can be played forever and one that can bring generations together. This course has turned into a great place for young and old golfers and that is a great benefit to the entire community. I have played with people who are ninety years plus and this is a course that can be enjoyed by golfers of all ages."

"It is my pleasure to provide any help I can to this vital recreational outlet for area seniors and veterans," stated Senator Flanagan. "This golf course has grown in the last few years and the new deck and other additions will greatly add to the golfing experience. I congratulate the Northport American Legion Post 694 for their successful efforts in making this a course the region can be proud of."
