Nozzolio Bill Signed Into Law Creates The ‘Waterloo-birthplace Of Memorial Day Highway’
Albany— Citing the important role of Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day, New York State Senator Michael Nozzolio today announced that legislation he sponsored to designate a portion of State Route 96 in Seneca County as the ‘Waterloo-Birthplace of Memorial Day Highway’ has been signed into law.
“This new law will dedicate the ‘Waterloo – Birthplace of Memorial Day Highway’ and pay tribute to the National recognition Waterloo has received as the first community to hold an annual Memorial Day ceremony,” said Senator Nozzolio. “It is important that we honor and thank our veterans for the sacrifices that they have made to keep our country free. This highway designation will help serve as a daily reminder and a lasting tribute to the debt of gratitude we owe our veterans.”
The portion of State highway that will receive the honor runs along State Route 96 from the Town of Phelps to the Town of Ulysses.
In 2004, Senator Nozzolio was successful in securing approval from the New York State Thruway Authority to place museum signs on the NYS Thruway I-90 near the Waterloo exit, which advertise the National Memorial Day Museum in Waterloo. The Memorial Day opened in 1966, the year the United States Congress declared Waterloo the Birthplace of Memorial Day. Senator Nozzolio previously secured $120,000 in State funding to support the Waterloo Memorial Day Museum.
