Senator Nozzolio And Auburn Memorial Hospital Open New Digital Mammography Unit

Michael F. Nozzolio

Auburn— New York State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio and Assemblyman Gary Finch joined officials and staff from Auburn Memorial Hospital to celebrate the acquisition of a state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Unit at AMH’s Essential Diagnostic Center.

The new digital mammography unit will expand Auburn Memorial Hospital’s services to women by adding full field digital mammography – the most advanced technology available for the early detection of breast cancer. Senator Nozzolio has been an ardent supporter and advocate for increasing healthcare services at AMH and successfully secured a total of $5.9 million in total state aid for the hospital last year, including $500,000 that was used for the digital mammography unit.

“Last year, Auburn Memorial Hospital was in danger of closing,” said Senator Nozzolio. “Through hard work and significant state funding to stabilize the hospital’s finances, we have been able to save Auburn Memorial Hospital for the community. The purchase of this critical digital mammography technology will allow AMH to better serve the healthcare needs of the women of Cayuga County and I look forward to continuing my aggressive efforts on the behalf of AMH.”

Scott Berlucchi, AMH President and CEO, said, “We are deeply thankful for the ongoing support and advocacy of Senator Michael F. Nozzolio. He has been a tireless advocate for the hospital, and a good friend. With his help, we will continue to fulfill our mission to provide compassionate, quality care to our community.”

New digital technology is gradually replacing traditional film-based mammograms. While the procedure for taking the images is the same for both types of mammograms, digital images are recorded and processed on a computer. Unlike film-based mammograms, digital images can be enlarged and manipulated to get a closer look at the breast tissue and any suspicious areas. Faster and more accurate, digital imaging also does away with bulky film X-rays and allows images to be viewed by multiple users at the same time on different computers.

Robert K. Bergan, Chairman of the AMH Board of Trustees, said, “Once again, Senator Nozzolio has shown his deep commitment to the future of Auburn Memorial Hospital. The Board of Trustees is grateful for all the work he has done for this most important community asset.”

Assemblyman Gary Finch said, "I am pleased to join with Senator Nozzolio today to celebrate the opening of the Essential Diagnostics Center and to show our continued support for health care in Cayuga County. I applaud the efforts being
made by Auburn Memorial Hospital in expanding services for our community."

The new Women’s Diagnostic Center is located on Seward Avenue in Auburn.
