New York Hispanic Ministers Condemn Police Brutality In Puerto Rico

Ruben Diaz

[Bronx, NY] On Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 10:00 AM, the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization will gather in the Christian Community Neighborhood Church located at 1437 Longfellow Avenue (between Jennings and Freeman Avenues in Bronx County) to express their outrage and send a message to the Governor of Puerto Rico in response to the brutal killing of Mr. Miguel Caceres, a resident of Humacao Puerto Rico by three Puerto Rican Police Officers.

"Although the three police officers involved have been arrested and are facing criminal charges, we believe that situations like this one should be publicly condemned throughout the world," stated New York State Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz, President of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization. "How can we criticize police brutality here in New York City and keep quiet when police officers in our countries of origin and hometowns are doing much worse and killing people in broad daylight and in full view of the public?"

According to news reports, on Saturday August 11, 2007, Police Officers Javier Pagan Cruz, Carlos Sustache and Zulma Diaz DeLeon shot and killed Miguel Caceres while he was lying on the floor.
