New York State Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz Opposes End Of Lyfe Programs

[Albany] New York State Senator  Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) strongly opposes plans to shut down the Martha Neilson School which is part of New York City’s LYFE/Living for the Young Family through Education Program for Pregnant and Parenting Students. Senator Rev. Diaz remains committed to his support for New York City’s high schools for pregnant girls, alternative high school programs, and GED programs which have saved many Bronx students from becoming drop-outs.

Upon learning about the New York City Department of Educations’ plans to close the Martha Neilson School and end alternative high school programs, Senator Rev. Diaz stated, "I am appalled that New York City would consider removing a pregnant teenager’s choice of obtaining a high school diploma by shutting down successful programs that help them to succeed. We should build upon these alternative education programs and GED programs which offer hope to our youth instead of shutting them down and offering our youth no way forward."

These programs have been in existence for 50 years, and offer an array of comprehensive social services to meet the needs of young parents who wish to stay in school and complete their high school education. The LYFE program is part of Bronx Regional High School, located at 1010 Rev. James A. Polite Avenue in the 32nd Senatorial District. This program, like many, offers a disciplined and respectful atmosphere allowing students with past academic or behavior problems to graduate from high school and go on to college.

Senator Diaz has sent an open letter expressing his strong opposition to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with copies to Chancellor Joel Klein, Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, and Senior Superintendent Cami Anderson.
