Senator Rev. Ruben Diaz And New York Hispanic Clergy Organization Will Hold Press Conference To Support NYC ID Cards

On Thursday, August 9, 2007 at 12:00 noon, on the steps of City Hall, New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz will join with the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization to offer support for legislation calling for the creation and issuance of identification cards for all New York City residents, including illegal immigrants.

Senator Rev. Diaz stated, "Government-issued photo identification cards will help New Yorkers who cannot get driver's licenses to enhance employment opportunities, enhance their banking opportunities, ensure that all residents will have access to necessary municipal city services, as well as help solve and prevent future crimes."

"I applaud City Council Member Hiram Monserrate’s efforts to promote the spirit of Executive Order 41 by introducing this important piece of legislation. This will indeed close the loophole that has done nothing but drive many New Yorkers underground out of fear of our City health and safety officials."

Senator Rev. Diaz and the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization have been ardent supporters of Executive Order 41, also sponsored by Council Member Monserrate. Executive Order 41 was signed into law in 2003. It specifies that City agencies offering public services, among them schools and hospitals, cannot report the immigration status of a person who comes to solicit their services, nor can such agencies ask questions pertaining to immigration status.
