Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz Calls For Hispanic Elected Officials Not To Attend Monday’s Meeting With Hillary Clinton

New York State Senator Reverend Ruben Diaz (D-Bronx) is calling on Hispanic elected officials in Albany and throughout New York State not to attend Monday’s scheduled meeting with Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton where she expects to gain the endorsement of Governor Eliot Spitzer and all of New York State Democratic leaders.

"I am asking for Bronx County Chair Jose Rivera and all of the Hispanic elected officials not to attend this meeting and not endorse any presidential candidate who wants our support until they meet with Hispanic leaders and discuss the issues that directly affect our communities," stated Senator Rev. Diaz. "So far, none of the presidential candidates from either party have paid attention to the Hispanic community. We need to insist that all candidates – from both parties – demonstrate their concern and respect for the Hispanic community and Hispanic leaders and clarify their positions on immigration reform, and to tell us where they stand on issues such as the status of Puerto Rico."

Senator Rev. Diaz is asking for Bronx County Chairman Jose Rivera to coordinate a presidential forum in the Hispanic community and to invite all of presidential candidates from both parties to attend and to show their concern for Hispanic New Yorkers.

According to Senator Rev. Diaz, "The Hispanic vote was clearly the swing vote not only in the last presidential primary, but also when our country voted in a new Congress last year. We can no longer be expected to energize our base if our leaders and issues are being ignored."
