Senator Saland Announces Passage Of Bill To Help Parents Of Special Education Students Find Services

Stephen M. Saland

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced Senate passage of his bill, S.6275, which requires Chairs of Committees on Special Education to provide the parents of a child with a disability with a list of programs and services available to the child.

Committees on Special Education (CSE) and Committees on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) are primarily charged with identifying, evaluating, and making recommendations regarding the appropriate educational placement of children with disabilities.

"Parents of disabled children often face challenges in trying to find appropriate services for their children," said Senator Saland. "Requiring these committees to provide a list of services and programs serves to better inform parents of accessible and available community support to help both their child and the entire family.

The bill has passed both houses of the Legislature and will now be sent to the Governor.
