Senator Morahan Hosts Roundtable On Paid Family Leave

New York State Senator Thomas P. Morahan, a member of the Senate Labor Committee willhost a downstate "Roundtable Discussion on Paid Family Leave Legislation" on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Nanuet Public Library, located at 149 Church Street in Nanuet.

The Senator recently introduced multiple bills regarding paid family leave. The Senator's legislation provides for partial pay during periods of family leave to care for a seriously ill family member, or newborns. Governor Spitzer has also introduced paid family leave legislation, as have members of the Assembly.

Morahan will be joined at the 'Roundtable' by Senate Labor Committee Chairman George D. Maziarz, as well as previously invited representatives from organized labor, the business community, as well as leaders from the private and public sector to discuss pending bills regarding paid family leave.

50 million Americans have been able to take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave since 1993, when the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was signed into law. This policy has enabled individuals to care for new babies, sick family members and to recover from their own serious illnesses. FMLA provides only unpaid leave, which means too many people still can’t afford to take time off to deal with urgent family needs.

The public is invited to the 'Roundtable' at the Nanuet Public Library to listen to the commentary of a diverse group of invited speakers.
