State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) and Assemblyman David G. McDonough (19th Assembly District) recently announced that the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has begun a $14 million improvement project at the Seaford Train Station.

Senator Fuschillo and Assemblyman McDonough, both of whom have long advocated for renovating the station, recently met with LIRR President Helena Williams and other LIRR officials in Seaford to discuss the improvements that will be made and the benefits they will bring to the community.

“This improvement project represents a $14 million investment in the Seaford community. Once this project is complete, the Seaford Train Station will function more efficiently, look nicer, and enhance the quality of life for the thousands of residents who use the LIRR each day,” said Senator Fuschillo.

“I am happy that the LIRR will be making these upgrades to the Seaford Train Station. The LIRR’s decision to make these renovations is great news for the entire Seaford community,” said Assemblyman McDonough.

“I am very pleased that we are able to perform this major renovation work at Seaford Station,” said LIRR President Helena Williams. “When this project is complete, our Seaford customers will have a new 12-car platform with a new platform-level waiting room, an elevator, escalator, stairs, lighting, and Public Address system. This is an important improvement for the 3,600 customers who use this station everyday.”

Seaford residents can look forward to the following improvements once the project is complete:

- New concrete platform and waiting room
- New elevator
- New escalator
- New heating
- New state of the art communications system
- Enhanced lighting system
- East and Center staircase improvements

According to the LIRR, work will be done in two phases. First phase work includes demolition then reconstruction of the eastern half of the platform. During this work, the east end staircase near Washington Avenue will be closed and customers will use the western half of the platform and the west end staircases, at Jackson Avenue. From March 3 through March 31, eastbound Seaford customers will use the last eight train cars, westbound Seaford customers will use the first eight train cars. Starting April 1, eastbound Seaford customers will use the last six train cars, westbound Seaford customers will use the first six train cars. Announcements will be made on all trains directing customers to the proper cars for boarding and disembarking at Seaford during the work.

In addition, the platform waiting room, center staircase and escalator will be open through April 1, then closed for renovation. The new waiting room along with the renovated eastern half of the platform is expected to be reopened to customers in time for winter, 2009. Phase two work, which will include demolition and reconstruction of the western half of the platform, will then get underway. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.

Residents who have questions about the project or LIRR service can call the LIRR at 718-558-8228.
