Senator Flanagan and Island Harvest Join Together in Fight Against Hunger

John J. Flanagan

Senator John J. Flanagan (2nd Senate District) and Island Harvest President and Chief Executive Randi
Shubin Dresner joined together to unveil the organization’s newest tool in their fight against hunger – a new 53’ refrigerated trailer.  The new trailer, which was fully funded through an $80,000 grant Senator Flanagan secured, will allow Island Harvest to transport perishable foods and to broaden its efforts to help those in need.

“We are extremely grateful to Senator Flanagan for his support in securing the funds necessary to purchase the refrigerated trailer that will enable Island Harvest to get more food to those in need on Long Island,” said Ms. Dresner.  “Senator Flanagan has been an exceptional friend to Island Harvest, sharing our deep passion and thorough understanding of the pervasive effects of hunger, especially on children, and we are thrilled to have him on our side in the fight against hunger.”

According to the organization’s web site, Island Harvest has grown to become the third largest food rescue organization in the United States and the largest hunger relief organization on Long Island.  They are assisted by over 1,000 active and trained volunteers and a staff of 18 and deliver seven million pounds of food per year, supplementing about 5.4 million meals.

“Island Harvest is such a vital piece of our collective fight against hunger on Long Island and I am always glad to play a small role in their efforts.  This truck will help them help others and, right now, that role is essential to our region,” stated Senator Flanagan.  “While I am honored by their appreciation of my efforts on their behalf, it is the volunteers and staff of this wonderful organization that deserve our thanks and our support.”

Senator Flanagan pointed out that, with the coming winter season, Island Harvest is looking for community help.  In addition to seeking volunteers, the organization is always accepting private donations as well as corporate grants to sustain its food rescue programs.
