Serrano Celebrates Growing Number Of Same-sex Couples In The Bronx

Reiterates his Support for Gay Marriage in New York State

Bronx, NY – State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) today highlighted a recent UCLA report that showed a growing population of same-sex couples in the outer boroughs. He called it an exciting demographic trend that will positively benefit The Bronx.

"The Bronx has always been a bastion of diversity, whether it's race, religion or sexual orientation," said the Senator. "We welcome same-sex couples with open arms. They are neighbors, friends and family members. On top of that, we appreciate the contributions they make to our civil society, our schools and our economy."

The August 2008 report by UCLA's Williams Institute found that 62% of same-sex couples in New York City live outside of Manhattan. This includes nearly 3,000 couples in the Bronx, the majority of whom are African-American and Latino. An estimated 2,711 Bronx children are living in households led by same-sex couples.

"The LGBT community deserves every right afforded to heterosexuals, including the right to marry," said Senator Serrano.

He added: "We have gay men and women in the Bronx who serve in the military. If they can fight and die for our country, they should certainly be able to marry here." He also praised Governor David Paterson for his strong and principled advocacy on this issue.

"In politics, especially during a presidential election, we hear a lot about family values. Well there is no more important family value than supporting people who love one another, and who provide and care for their parents, siblings and children."

The Senator called upon his Bronx neighbors to be vigilant against any forms of discrimination and harassment. "Let's make sure this borough remains a model of tolerance and compassion."
